You love love love to design baby and children clothing and you went to school for that. There is just so much you can learn from the classroom. Some lucky ones might gained a little real life experience at their internship programs, but living through a full time job can be an eye opener.
Now that you’ve graduated from Fashion College; you got hired for the first design job, now what? Most of you started out as the Assistant Designer, and for some ‘crazy’ pure luck, some got hired to be THE Designer right off the bat. The best thing you should do for your career is to learn as much as you can as the Assistant first. You might not have the patience for it, but is going to be so worth it. Learn the ins & outs of the industry before you leap over to ‘claim the fame’ to design the line yourself. I was ‘lucky’ enough to work for a lazy Head Designer on my first job in the New York womenswear industry …I managed to learn so much about the business within a short period of time and headed up the entire design department. But, beware that often times, you have less time doing the actual designing once you become manager or director. Overseeing ‘the picture’ will be your main job.
Whether you are in the apparel / accessory design industry, the design process at these companies are quite similar. Most companies are set up into various departments. In a nutshell: Design, Merchandising, Product Development/ Production, and Sales. Here, we will mainly focus on design.
For the kidswear apparel industry, there are mainly 2-3 seasons a year: Spring, Fall, Holiday/ Winter, and possibly a small Summer collection. Resort wear might seems to apply to the women and menswear world, but there are some designer brands like to introduce a capsule collection for the ‘minis’ to go with the grownup designs.
Then, there are the retailers such as mass market (i.e. moderated chain stores, etc.) and department stores. They usually like to drop new delivery (12 per year) each month to add to their assortments or freshen up the stores. With the digital world, everything will be fast, faster, big, and bigger. If you’re working for a company that provides to these retailers, you better get busy…get inspired.
